For This Weekend...

This trailer, just released, looks really good; why would this be an important film? Childhood has been under attack for a long time, sometimes, from the child's own parents, so the idea of the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Sand Man and Santa all joining forces to "protect and guard" the children, is the most comforting concept that I have seen in awhile (the very title "guardian" is a legal one referring to the absent parents who aren't doing their jobs):
With an all-star cast including Chris Pine (This Means War), Jude Law, Isla Fischer, Hugh Jackman and Alec Baldwin, it appears that the "evil demon" coming to get the children is none other than Pitch himself (Jude Law). Why do these wonderful legends of childhood have greater powers than we ever imagined? Because children have greater powers than we can imagine. With an opening date of November 21, (no-doubt the big Thanksgiving weekend opener) Rise of the Guardians is looking excellent all ready!
Citizen Gangster, (no opening date yet), starring Scott Speedman and Kelly Reilly (Mary Morstan Watson, Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), regrettably, looks like a very timely story:
Coming out in August is the remake of Total Recall, starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, Bill Nihgy and Ethan Hawke, when "the nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai vie for supremacy, a factory worker (Farrell) begins to suspect that he's a spy, though he is unaware which side of the fight he's on." This below is just the teaser trailer (Hollywood is starting to tease us more and more) but the real trailer is to be released this Sunday.
Mighty Fine, with no release date set, looks like the quintessential film for encoding: who has been living beyond our means and who is now bankrupt with businesses failing? This is a film in which the details will really answer those questions, but the trailer does a great job whetting our curiosity:
The post on Snow White is coming up today. Why is that important? It's been exactly 200 years since the Grimm Brothers published their original version of the tale, and this year, two different re-tellings have been adapted for a new generation, including Mirror, Mirror, opening this weekend.  Snow White also illustrates the most important characteristics of the "princess warrior cult" which will be everywhere in films this year (we have all ready seen her in John Carter for example).
I am seeing Wrath of the Titans today, and I will try and post on it tonight/tomorrow (so far all the reviews agree that it's much better than the previous Clash of the Titans from a few years back; I definitely prefer the original 1981 film with Harry Hamlin and Ray Harryhausen's Medusa, and my review is here: The Medusa Within: Clash Of the Titans). I've spent a lot of time on the Snow White because it's so important; I hope you will enjoy it because we will be referencing it, probably all year long.
